About Calabria
Calabria is on the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula, the toe and the ankle of the Italian “boot” lying between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. The Calabrian coastline is one of the most beautiful parts of Italy and is home to some stunning beaches and crystal clear aquamarine waters.
Calabria has a population of just over 2million and spreads over an area of over 15,000 km2. It has five provinces; Catanzaro (capital city), Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia.
It has a rich and diverse history and has been inhabited since pre-historic times. A wealth of archaeological finds can be seen at the Reggio National Museum Of Archaeology including the famous bronze statues of two greek warriors said to date back to 5th century BC, which were found off the coast of Calabria near Riace in 1972. It has been invaded and occupied by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Normans at various points in its history and is now home to many historic sites which include ancient Greco-Roman ruins, castles, palaces and Byzantine churches and much more.
Calabria has three mountain ranges - Pollino, the Sila, and Aspromonte where you can visit the national parks, enjoy mountain climbing, trekking on horseback and witness the artificial lakes which have been created by the water gushing down from the mountains. The diversity of the natural habitats offers many opportunities to experience the uniqueness of the flora and fauna to the region and to watch some of the 510 bird species recorded in Italy. The mountains are perfect for both Alpine and Nordic skiing during the winter months.
During the summer months a wealth of activities are available in Calabria including sailing, fishing, scuba diving, and windsurfing. For those people who enjoy golf, there are three golf courses in Calabria with many more planned throughout the region.
Perhaps if you were feeling really adventurous you could hop on a ferry from Calabria to Sicily. It is an amazing island, steeped in history, where you can climb Mount Etna and shop for the best fashion that Italy has to offer.
Whatever you choose to do, you can be assured that once in Calabria you will experience all the true beauty and charm that Italy has to offer.
